I have been through a number of wireless routers over the past decade or more, everything from the A/Bs to the Gs and multiple instantiations of the Ns. I, originally, started with Linksys routers, but have strayed on multiple occasions due to perceived quality issues.
My recent experience routers includes the Netgear RangeMax (very stable and reliable router) and the recent Linksys EA4500 (again stable and reliable with an increase in wireless speed). The D-Link has a somewhat unique form factor - cylindrical tower (I am noting a trend to fewer blinking Leds on the newer routers).
My review of the D-Link Wireless-N600 will highlight some of the differences from the Linksys EA4500 when I see them.
Setup: installation took roughly 5-10 minutes, essentially plug and play, no CDs to load drivers from or software. My extended setup (the whole network: 2nd desktop, netbooks, Wii, XBox, Roku, smartphones, wireless printer, 1TB USB storage device added as network storage) took an additional 30-45 minutes, for an overall install/setup time of a little less than 1 hour. The only troubleshooting necessary was a simple reboot if the router did not connect immediately after configuration. This is very comparable to the Linksys EA4500.
Network Speed: I ran the numbers from Speedtest.net, having tried multiple sites in the past with a wide range of variance between sites. I ran both desktops and a remote netbook (trying to stretch the limits by moving to the backyard in an effort to promote a weak connection and dropped packets - the router is positioned on the second floor of a 2500 sqft house near the front, so the signal traversed most of the house through a floor and multiple walls, including stucco).
Upload speeds all ranged from 2.5 to 2.7 (no real change, but then I expected that since most ISPs restrict upload speeds well below download speeds)[Note this is somewhat better than the Linksys EA4500s numbers of around 1.6]; download speeds 12.09 - 24.59Mbps. The speeds were very similar to those achieved with the Linksys EA4500.
As noted the range was tested through multiple walls/floors/materials and seems to have been roughly the same as that provided with the Linksys EA4500.
Problems: Similar to those in the Linksys model, regarding added USB devices - hubs will not work, but otherwise it is nice being able to hang a 1-2Tb drive off the router for access by the entire house. I do like the guest access on the Linksys, and the price of the D-Link is about half that of the Linksys.
Overall, a good router, providing good range and speed. If I were choosing between the Linksys EA4500 and this D-Link model, the major deciding factor would have to be the price. Personally, I will hang the D-Link off the Linksys via CAT-5 cable, that I ran way back when I networked the house, to another room to provide a second wireless access point giving me better overall coverage. P-)
